Boy can I relate to this! I screw up all the time in my pursuit of perfection. My Aunt, who is a retired school teacher, chastises herself for mistakes in her hand written letters to me. She doesn't own a computer. It makes her hesitant to write me - for she's a perfectionist too. :-( Maybe I'll turn off my spell check next time I write her so she can see just how imperfect my writing is.

Dear Lucinda,

First, I am sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. I know you will find comfort in memories of good times; memories that will become your friend's heritage and legacy - and part of yours as well.

Second, I fully agree with you regarding the use of electronic media to convey, well, really much of anything these days. We can be intimate with one another, slightly less intimate with a personal note, a little bit more, indeed, with words printed on paper.

But when our communication descends to the electronic dispatch of 1s and 0s, we become so impersonal, so detached that a portion of our humanity is sacrificed in the interest of expediency. If we have become so obsessed with the speed of communication over human to human contact, we have moved further away from what we could be: a society of heart.

Immediacy cannot be that important.

Now there's something called 'Brain Train'. That, too, is addicting. Why do I need to train my brain? I got to age 63 (almost 64) and maybe my brain is trained enough for now. I read a lot, do plenty of math and problem solving. But, I find myself mapping birds while remembering letters and guessing which bird the letters are spelling; trying to trick monsters in 'monster garden,' and other such mundane training tasks. Will it help me now??? Go play solitare. It may well be less frustrating!

I used to teach my grade-schoolers that when we read, we actually hold a conversation with the author. We ask him or her questions, seek clarification and we exclaim when we are excited or disappointed in the actions of a character.

With a blog, we actually DO get to hold that conversation with the author. Like you, I wish more folks would comment so the rich conversations could carry forward.

I, too, saw the Anne Lamott commentary in the April issue of Sunset. Thought it was a bit odd, initially, that it would be in that publication. Then, I was simply glad it found light in a magazine so widely read by others. Her thoughts were not about writing. They were about life, which is something perhaps far more universal than what we do except on our best days. Glad you picked up on it. Your quote of Ms. Lamott is timely. Excellent! Thanks.
